U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal recently met with UConn Health officials to discuss the important role data registries will play in the future of health care in Connecticut and across the country. All health care stakeholders, organizations, providers, insurers, and patients, have questions related to the medical care they are receiving or providing. The answers to these questions should be accessible in registries providing patients the data they need to make informed health care decisions and allowing health care organizations to report and benchmark their quality measures against other providers.

“Beyond participation in national data registries, it will be the changes in clinical practice, based on the rigorous data analysis that will define meaningful improvements in health care delivery. The commitment to total outcome transparency will be anxiety provoking at first but, in the end, it will be the ‘quality tide’ that raises all boats: improved patient outcomes, optimal practitioner performance, and value-added, highest quality care that third party payers will demand,” says Dr. Stephen Lahey, chief of cardiothoracic surgery, and vice chair of quality improvement at UConn Health.

During his visit, Blumenthal also toured the research lab of Dr. Pramod Srivastava, professor of immunology and medicine and director of the Carole and Ray Neag Comprehensive Cancer Center. Blumenthal learned about Srivastava’s recently approved FDA genomics-driven clinical study for patients with advanced stage ovarian cancer, in which personalized cancer vaccines will be developed for each patient.

National Media Spotlight on UConn’s Migrant Farm Worker Clinics

Univision producer Emilce Elgarresta and Dr. Bruce Gould, founder of the migrant farm worker clinics, during the video shoot at Thrall’s Tobacco Farm in Windsor.

The UConn Migrant Farm Worker Clinics received national media exposure this week after being featured on the Spanish language Univision Network (watch video). The segment was part of a series of reports that aired during Univision’s special Health Week campaign June 6-13.

The migrant farm worker clinics are organized and run by health profession students involved with the Connecticut Area Health Education Centers (CT AHEC) Program at UConn Health. The students, along with physician advisors and volunteer interpreters, help provide medical and dental screenings for the hundreds of migrant workers who come to Connecticut each growing season.

The lifesaving care they provide caught the attention of Univision producer Emilce Elgarresta. She contacted Dr. Bruce Gould, UConn Health’s associate dean of primary care who started the mobile health clinics in 1997. Elgarresta said she wanted to do a story about the clinics because she was very impressed and moved with Dr. Gould’s commitment to help the farm workers.

“Migrant farm workers are among the most economically disadvantaged and most medically vulnerable groups in the United States having little, if any, access to health care or medication,” says Gould. “The clinics are a way to provide them much needed medical care while teaching students that caring for the poor and vulnerable is part of the gift of being a health care provider.”

A few weeks later, Elgarresta flew to Connecticut from Miami and she and her crew spent two days in Connecticut taping the story. The segment highlighted the clinic held recently at the Thrall Tobacco Farm in Windsor where workers from Puerto Rico and Mexico took advantage of the free health exams.

Hannah Kotler, a second-year medical student and one of last year’s clinic coordinators, and Dr. Kenia Mansilla, a family medicine physician in Hartford and a longtime clinic volunteer, were interviewed in Spanish for the segment.

The story is part of a yearly campaign by Univision, the fifth largest television network in the U.S., to provide their audience with information about timely health care topics and disease prevention. The stories are aired across the network’s news and entertainment shows, as well as their radio networks, webcasts and town hall broadcasts.

The UConn Migrant Farm Worker Clinics operate annually from June to October and provide services to more than 400 migrant farm workers at nine farms and greenhouses throughout the state. The clinic engages pre-health professions students including high school and college students, as well as health professions trainees and residents.

The Connecticut Area Health Education Center Network (CT AHEC) is a federal and state funded program supporting primary care workforce development.  CT AHEC is located within the University of Connecticut’s Center for Public Health and Health Policy at UConn Health in Farmington, Conn.

Health Disparities Clinical Summer Research Fellowship Program

UConn Health’s Health Career Opportunity Programs (HCOP) recently received an $80,000 grant from the Aetna Foundation to expand one of its summer programs focused on health disparities. The grant will allow an increase in the number of pre-medical and pre-dental college students in the summer program who are interested in health disparities and primary care.

The program is designed to provide a clinical research and enrichment experience and an introduction to health disparities, cross cultural issues, principles of clinical medicine and skills for public health research and interventions. It also will offer an overview of approaches to cultural definitions, public health issues, and discussion of specific techniques for working with diverse populations in community settings.

“I would like to thank the Aetna Foundation, whose continued support has been incalculable in our efforts to encourage urban youth to aspire to careers in the health professions,” says Dr. Marja Hurley, HCOP director.

Making a Difference in the Hartford Community

Ann Ferris, Ph.D., RD, was honored for outstanding individual contributions at the 2015 Food Security Awards on March 26, held at the Hartford Public Library. The City of Hartford’s Advisory Commission on Food Policy regularly hosts the Community Food Security Awards event to raise awareness about community food security and to recognize individuals and organizations in Hartford that are working to improve nutrition, strengthen local food systems, and empower communities for better long-term food security.

Martha Page, MPH, CPH, executive director of the Hartford Food System, presented this year’s Food Security Award in the Individual Category to Dr. Ann Ferris. For more than 37 years, Dr. Ferris has participated in and led research groups from the University of Connecticut and UConn Health with a focus on explaining, preventing and treating various food-related conditions in underserved populations such as childhood obesity and iron deficiency anemia. She also directs the Husky Programs team, funded by the USDA SNAP-Ed program. UConn students participate in service-learning courses and provide direct nutrition education to Connecticut community members predominantly in Hartford. Ferris’ professional commitment to research and education supporting underserved populations in Hartford demonstrates her passion in creating change in Hartford’s food system and the prevention and treatment of food-related conditions. Her tireless pursuit of ideas and methods to improve food policies and systems toward better health has made a positive difference for Connecticut citizens.

In addition to her UConn-related work, Ann has worked on many other projects dedicated to promoting food security, healthy lifestyles, and access to healthy food. She and her team are now working with the Office for Children, Youth, Families, and Recreation and Hartford Early Childcare Centers to develop obesity prevention policies and programs and to continue to monitor preschool child obesity rates first done with the “Think differently for their future: Child Weight Surveillance in Preschool in Hartford, Connecticut.”

Dr. Ferris recently retired and stepped down as director of the Center for Public Health and Health Policy (CPHHP), but will continue to work part-time and lead Husky Programs and direct research to improve food security. She and Martha Page are currently leading a project funded by the Donaghue Foundation R3 (Making Research Relevant and Ready) to develop a viable plan to increase healthy food availability in Hartford mid-size markets.
