UConn Health Announces Its 2016 Nightingale Nurses

UConn Health has announced the 10 nurses who will be presented with Nightingale Award for Excellence in Nursing later this year:

JoAnne Donaldson Blythe, Procedures Center

Blythe, Joann_Nightingale_JGelineau_6994“Joanne is unique in the way she gives herself to others, and comforts them through difficult circumstances.”

“In addition to Joanne’s superb commitment to her patients’ safety, her selflessness, caring nature, and ethics clearly demonstrate her passion. Her philosophy, ‘the patient comes first,’ is always apparent by her actions. Joanne upholds the highest standards within her profession.”

Frank Faccin, Garner Correctional Institution

Faccin,Frank_Nightingale_JGelineau_7324“Frank Faccin, LPN, has been the ‘go-to’ staff member at the Department of Correction facility housing the most seriously mentally ill inmates. Despite being ‘only an LPN,’ his nursing and physician peers rely on his over 20 years of knowledge and judgement.”

“He sustained a significant injury during an inmate assault, yet returned to work with the same positive attitude he always displayed. The CDOC awarded him the Distinguished Service Medal.”

Lisa Gentile, Outpatient Infectious Diseases and Travel Clinic

Gentile, Lisa_Nightingale_JGelineau_6936final“Because of Lisa we have cured more than 97 percent of our [hepatitis C] patients.”

“Lisa is that employee that every manager wants working for them; that every doctor wants as their nurse; and every MA wants as their counterpart. And the reason is: She makes us all look good.”

Keisha Johnson, Osborn Correctional Institution

Johnson,Keisha _Nightingale9990“At any given time, she oversees the care of 45 to 50 HIV-positive inmates and oversees inmates who are in active hepatitis C treatment. She is extremely well organized, caring, and understanding in her role of ID Nurse Case Manager.”

“Keisha in July of 2015 took time out of her busy schedule to create an HIV/AIDS awareness production. This production highlights the hidden talents of many inmates. The invited inmates/staffs were able to be educated on HIV/AIDS myths and facts. Her production resulted in many inmates who were afraid to know their HIV status now requesting to be screened for the HIV virus.”

Arlene Morin, Clinical Nurse Specialist, John Dempsey Hospital

Morin, Arlene_JGelineau_5904“Arlene Does consults for inpatients and outpatients in the clinic that include teaching, support and hands-on of how and what to expect… Arlene always looks out for the patient’s best interest when it comes to their health and healing.”

“My nursing career has been personally touched by Arlene and in turn, Arlene is able to touch the lives of all patients I care for. Thank you Arlene for giving me the world’s best example of what it means to be a Nightingale Nurse.”

Lynne Neff, Correctional Managed Health Care Transitional Services Manager

Neff,Lynne_JGelineau_7071“Collaborating closely with others, Lynne has strived to ensure continuity of care and a more successful return to society for many. When the prognosis of releasing patients is poor, Lynne has creatively arranged hospice services at the patient’s home when family support has been stable, or successfully explored other options.”

“By her work, Lynne has demonstrated advocacy in caring for a diverse, underserved, and disenfranchised population that is more often than not forgotten by the public.”

Anne Niziolek, Nurse Manager, Medicine 4

Niziolek, Anne NightingaleJGelineau7110 final“Anne is deserving of the Nightingale Award because of the impact that she has had on patient care, her willingness to always go beyond the call of duty, and the excellence that she demonstrates in her leadership role.”

“Anne seizes every opportunity to make improvements in daily nursing practice, recognizing that this helps patients as well as caregivers… We are truly fortunate to have such a selfless and caring nurse and leader.”

Dawn Smith, Calhoun Cardiology Center

Smith, Dawn_Nightingale_JGelineau_7184“Dawn is simply an excellent nurse with the personality that exemplifies the strong qualities that the nursing profession was built on.”

“Dawn is a model of the type of service UConn must provide to succeed. My patient’s daughter has told several friends to come to UConn for their care. This would not happen without Dawn.”

Jennifer Sposito, Clinical Patient Navigator, Cardiac Unit

Sposito, Jennifer #44 Final“Generally speaking it takes years for a stroke coordinator to create a stroke program. Jennifer’s drive, passion, and tireless work helped reach this goal within a short five months.”

The work Jennifer has done to improve stroke care shows that our organization is exceeding the expectation.”Timothy Tralli, Correctional Head Nurse, Hartford Correctional Center

Timothy Tralli, Correctional Head Nurse, Hartford Correctional Center

Tralli, Timothy_Nightingale_JGelineau_7208“To ensure a proper ‘Code White’ response he helped initiate a training program for correctional officers on his shift… This program was the result of months of interaction and cooperation with the Warden and his staff, and currently is the only one in existence in the state. Our Codes are now a mix of the efforts of both medical and custody and are a testament to his enthusiasm and forward thinking when confronted with a problem.”

“His skills, knowledge and abilities as a nurse educator are second to none. His daily dedication is to the highest standards of nursing services.”

Welcome to Dr. Jeffrey Indes – our new chief of vascular and endovascular surgery in the Department of Surgery. Indes is a board-certified vascular surgeon and joins us from Yale where he served as associate program director in vascular surgery and assistant professor of surgery (vascular) at Yale School of Medicine since 2008.

“We are very honored to welcome Dr. Indes to the Department of Surgery at UConn Health,” said Dr. David W. McFadden, chair of the Department of Surgery and Surgeon-in-Chief at UConn Health. “Dr. Indes is a highly-skilled vascular surgeon with in-depth experience and training in the latest advanced, minimally invasive treatments and clinical trial research that will benefit our patients greatly.”

“I am excited to join UConn Health,” said Indes, who arrived last month. “I look forward to using the future hybrid operating room with advanced imaging to allow our team to offer patients the most advanced, minimally invasive treatments for aneurysms, arterial and venous diseases. Also, I plan to launch pioneering clinical trials to test the latest promising vascular surgery techniques and technology.”

Indes specializes in all aspects of vascular and endovascular surgery. He repairs complex aortic, thoracic, and abdominal aneurysms. He also treats patients experiencing blockages from carotid artery disease and peripheral artery disease (PAD). In addition, he performs arteriovenous (AV) access grafts for dialysis patients, and surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome (TOS), and mesenteric and renal vascular diseases. He also offers the latest treatments for removing varicose veins.

Indes adds, “As our population ages, it is critical to utilize the latest minimally invasive and endovascular surgical treatments available to care for older patients with vascular diseases who may have complex and challenging cases and ordinarily may not be candidates for surgery.”

“Dr. Indes’ arrival to UConn Health will significantly enhance the clinical, academic and residency training arms of the vascular surgery and endovascular program,” said Dr. Michael Azrin, director of the Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory at The Pat and Jim Calhoun Cardiology Center of UConn Health.

Indes received his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine with special honors in research for studying angiogenesis. He completed his residency training in general surgery at Temple University Hospital and his fellowship in vascular and endovascular surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Montefiore Medical Center.

UConn Health Honors Its Own

This fall, UConn Health’s recognition program, supported by the Human Resources Department, hosted a variety of successful events including the Dr. Peter J. Deckers Employee Appreciation Award and the annual celebration of employee years of service. These recognition events serve to highlight the excellence faculty and staff exemplify, every day, across UConn Health.

The sixth annual Dr. Peter J. Deckers Employee Appreciation Award, one of the highest employee award honors, was presented to Susan Garthwait, administrative program coordinator. The award goes to an employee consistently demonstrates passion and commitment, going above and beyond to help meet the goals of the UConn Health.

“Susan has served UConn Health for decades,” John Dempsey Hospital CEO Anne Diamond wrote in her nomination. “Her dedication to improving patient safety and employee engagement through her always positive and creative touch is a true asset to our organization. Susan’s out of the box approach, coupled with her enthusiasm, reaches all levels of the organization in a positive way. Additionally, Susan’s work is being circulated and recognized nationally as a best practice by our High Reliability consulting group, HPI.”

UConn Health’s High Reliability consultant, Steve Kreiser, says, “Susan’s dedicated efforts in the production of the Friday Flyer newsletter has helped to message our mission of safety, quality and satisfaction across the organization, helping to reduce complacency and raise risk awareness.”

The three other finalists for the Deckers Award were:

  • Qi Cheng, IT project manager, Strategic Projects and Clinical Systems
  • Elaine Chojnowski, executive staff assistant, Dean of School of Dental Medicine
  • Greg Sznaj, budget director, Budget and Data Analytics

Milestone Years of Service

Earlier this fall, 862 employees celebrated their years of service milestones at the annual Employee Recognition Dinner and Open House. At the Employee Recognition Dinner Oct. 14, 153 employees and guests enjoyed a full evening at the Farmington Club including a cocktail hour, dinner and an awards ceremony where employees who reached milestones of 25, 30, 35 and 40 years of service were recognized with their UConn Health pin by senior leadership. The following week, honorees were recognized at a breakfast open house in the Onyiuke Dining room where senior leadership presented service pins to the 5-, 10-, 15- and 20-year employees.

UConn Health postdoctoral fellow Leslie Caromile is celebrating two major accomplishments.

Caromile, who studies prostate cancer in the Center for Vascular Biology, is one of six members of the Keystone Symposia Fellows Class of 2015-2016. Additionally, she has received a grant from the National Institutes of Health for her research.

The Keystone Symposia on Molecular and Cellular Biology offers this fellowship program for postdocs as it seeks to draw researchers from underrepresented populations to study life sciences. Fellows must demonstrate a commitment to inclusiveness in the life sciences and mentor young scientists from underrepresented populations.

“I have been passionate about science for as long as I can remember,” Caromile says. “I spent my childhood at natural history museums and science fairs, on camping trips and nature hikes, in vegetable gardens and green houses, and with telescopes and microscopes.”

Caromile’s research on the transmembrane peptidase prostate specific membrane antigen (PSMA) and its function in prostate cancer tumor behavior is supported by the NIH/National Cancer Institutue K01 Mentored Research Scientist Award to Promote Diversity, amounting to more than $500,000 over five years.

“I am tremendously honored to receive both these awards and to be included in these groups of highly motivated researchers,” Caromile says. “I am looking forward to not only an active role as a scientist here at UConn Health but also as an active mentor and mentee.”

Caromile is of Eastern Cherokee heritage. She works in the laboratory of Linda Shapiro, director of the Center for Vascular Biology.

“Leslie Caromile is a gifted and innovative researcher who has independently developed an observation into a fascinating story unraveling critical mechanisms driving prostate tumor progression,” Shapiro says. “The award of the mentored training grant from the National Cancer Institute and her selection as a Keystone Fellow exemplify the caliber of her research and her dedication to promoting science education.”

Winter Art Exhibits at UConn Health

December brings three new art exhibits to UConn Health.

Power Boothe"New Work" exhibition is at UConn Health Dec. 7 through March 3.
Power Boothe’s “New Work” exhibition is at UConn Health Dec. 7 through March 3.

Power Boothe, a professor of painting at the University of Hartford’s Hartford Art School, will have his “New Work” exhibition on display in the Celeste LeWitt Gallery in the Food Court Dec. 7 through March 3. It is shown courtesy of the Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven.

Boothe, who lives in western Connecticut, has had more than 20 one-person exhibitions in New York City and nationally. The collections at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art and the New Britain Museum of American Art include his work, as do those of the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Honors he has received include the Guggenhein Fellowship for Painting, a National Endowment Individual Artist’s Fellowship, and a Pollock/Krasner Fellowship.

John Lo Presti's "Composing the rectangle" exhibition is at UConn Health Dec. 7 through March 3.
John Lo Presti’s “Composing the rectangle” exhibition is at UConn Health Dec. 7 through March 3.

Also on display in the LeWitt Gallery Dec. 7 through March 3 is John LoPresti’s “Composing the rectangle.” LoPresti, of Wethersfield, has been painting for more than 35 years, often inspired by landscapes of his environment and travels throughout New England and Europe.

Many of LoPresti’s pieces originate en plein air (in open air) with charcoal and pastel, leading to oil paintings on canvas. He’s shown a particular fondness for the land and sea of Deer Isle, Maine, and rural Mediterranean Europe.

Charles Reyburn's exhibition "The Seasons" is at UConn Health Dec. 10 through Feb. 29.
Charles Reyburn’s exhibition “The Seasons” is at UConn Health Dec. 10 through Feb. 29.

From Dec. 10 through Feb. 29, New London native Charles Reyburn’s “The Seasons” is on display in the lobby and mezzanine. Reyburn is considered one of the rare en plein air in southeastern Connecticut, working his paintings through elements of nature rather than in a studio. His style has been compared to that of the impressionists of the past, capturing a scene’s essence in a way that allows the viewer’s imagination to work into the painting.

Reyburn attended the Rhode Island School of Design in the late 1970s. His work is included in the Lyman Allyn Art Museum’s collection.

The UConn Health Art Advisory Committee invites viewings from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily.

UConn Health’s collection of fine art serves to enhance the environment and promote the sense of a caring community for patients, visitors, staff and students. Art is selected, acquired and exhibited by the UConn Health Art Advisory Committee. To view a selection of the permanent collection visit http://auxiliary.uchc.edu/art-collection.
